Will I Ever Get Home

[Comments] [Send Article] [Improper]

So I made my drop in Pittsburgh, PA. this morning (hope I never have to go back there again), and my DM sends me a load assignment to Arkansas. No problem, I thought, it delivers on Sunday. I thought great, then I'll get a load to So. Cal. then the second load assignment comes thru and it's to Northern Ca. and Delivers on the 22nd. To say I was upset would be an understatement. That would still put me home 2 weeks after I was supposed to be. Well, I sent a few messages to my DM letting him know how disappointed I was and that this was beyond unacceptable. I mean I've been away from home for 3 months and should not have been on this run to Pittsburgh in the first place.
Well, I then called my Dm and he said he was going to try to get a swap on Monday to get me home by Thursday. I've heard that before and there is no way he can promise that but he promised. I understand that he can only do so much, and he has been good to me so far, but if this is a sign of things to come then I might just have to start re-thinking my whole game plan. So we shall see what happens on Monday.
I wonder if they realize just how many people read this blog. So far I've said pretty much nothing but good about CR England, but honestly, this is really starting to change my mind. I told them last week that I was HITTING THE WALL.
Well, I better say no more.

Warren, I'm a semi retired long hauler and have been following your post. Burn't out in 3 months? Not good! Get it together! You've made it thru the worse part. It gets easier each time out. I did experience a simular situation many years ago. I was running an average of 1,000 miles per day for a not so legal outfit. It caught up to me after several months of running that hard. I was able to go local for the outfit for a few weeks. It only took me about 2 weeks and I was ready to back long hauling. Of course from then on I ran legal. 3 weeks out, 3 days off, and I ran an average of 600 miles per day. No logging in 2 books, or staying out more then 3 weeks. Hang in there and I'm pulling for you. Your friend, Rocky.

Warren, I think 12 hours hometime out of 3 months is ridiculous, to put it bluntly. In my previous messages to you, I kept thinking, "has he gotten home yet", but I stopped asking because you seemed to be enjoying yourself out there and I didn't want to rain on your parade. But I kept thinking that if it were me out there, there's no way I'd have been happy not getting home AT ALL. It does sound like CR England has been very good to you so far, but this is a major exception that they must address. I hope they come through for you in the short term and then allow you regular hometime in keeping with OTR industry norms thereafter (no less than 1 day home for each week out). Best wishes!

Hey, Warren, I have been following along with you for a few weeks now, and I have to say I sympathise. I started driving just a little over three years ago, and I remember all too well the feelings of loneliness and isolation that can creep up on you after too long on the road. Hang in there buddy; it doesn't always feel that way. Best of luck getting home, cherish the time there, and don't let dispatch keep you out so long next time. They have a bigger investment in you than you have in them. Carriers that will treat you will are right around the corner, waiting for a little more road time. Don't shout that from the rooftops, but a subtle reminder wouldn't hurt either. Stay loose.

Warren, I was surprised when I read you went to Pittsburgh. The last time we spoke, your dm was going to try to swap out the load, so you could get home. I feel your disappointment. You have a many people standing behind you, and I hope we give you some strength and comfort. And I'm going to pray that you get home sooner than you think. PS I have many thoughts about this particular industry practice, but I won't post them here.

Warren, sure hope you made it home, I am impressed you have done as good as you did so far. I am not sure I would like to be away from my wife that long. It would be good if they would let your spouse ride with you once in a while. How long to you have to work with them in oder to have spouse ride along? hang in there I have been reading as many blogs as possible before I make a decision what company I will throw in with. Thanks for the service you provide, not only for our economy and the country but also for us guys who are thinking about getting into OTR truck driving. ~john in Alaska
