I am proud of my drivers, we just won another award for having a safe record by the CTA..California Trucking Association..For Safety..This is in large part due to my boss..(I know what a kissass statement)..But for all his shortfalls he has the talent to spot talent, I've got to give him that..He hires only the crem de la crem and it pays off with a good record..Its hard to find the right drivers to make your division successful..However, and what I always say is GOOD PAY equals GOOD DRIVERS..Meaning you can then pick and choose who you want working for you..If you want a professional driver than offer professional wages..If you want a bunch of flunkies than offer little pay thinking you'll save so much money..I've paid my dues working for low pay and I've worked my way from the bottom..NOBODY CAN TAKE THAT AWAY FROM ME!!!..I think paying my dues has made me a much wiser person actually..So I feel like an alley cat in this business..The only thing really that seperates me from the other drivers is that I can communicate, organize, and act as a buffer between management..Thats IT!!..I am no better than the drivers I dispatch..And when called on I can run circles around most of them when I want..I miss driving full time but I am getting an education on the business side of things..Yes..I still drive but not as much anymore..When someone calls in sick I pull their loads..Anyway, Keep the hammer down and the shiny side up...VM-OUT!!!

Congrats on the safety award. You don't make any more money, but perspective customers will take that into consideration when looking into using the company.

Yes, the roads are safer since "I'm watching the kids" As I put it, the only good thing in my position is that I am guaranteed 50 hours a week..There is no guarantee for the other drivers..It may be 40 hours for them but thats one of the bennies of my job..Thats why I deal with the headaches I deal with..I actually put one of our rookies in a NEW I mean spankin' new Pete..Why?..Because my gut told me he could handle it and take care of the tractor..Why is that? Because his father was an owner-op and is quite happy to drive a new truck and is willing to keep it clean..The psychology I use is that I tell them "Hey, your a man I trust you to get it done!" and when you re-enforce a mans ego they will bust their butt for you..Set the bar high and give praise and a driver will deliver a load to hell and back..A simple "Thank you!" or "I appreciate it" does wonders..They don't get that from higher management.Men are easy, value their hard work and they'll eat out of the palm of your hand..

By the way, I am sincere when giving compliments to my drivers..Drivers have a tendency to spot BS in a heartbeat..So its not so much that I like manipulation its that I get what I want and they get what they want and everyone is fat dumb and happy. I am a driver and I know what makes drivers tick..Vm-out!
