Questions from a Wannabe

Wannabe is Back!!

Well, I found out from the unemployment office today, that I cannot recieve benefits from the state because I am receiving a severence from my last employer. Damn! I was hoping to get some help. But I did checkout a couple different driving schools CDTC - Commercial Driver Training Consultants and C1. I found I liked CDTC in Indianapolis best. The tuition is about 3300.00 and a 13 day training course. The tuition includes physical, license both learners and CDL class A, in class, and in truck training costs. They have a list of companies that recruit from this school. Some of which are: Boyd Brothers, Falcon Transport, National Distributors, Ravens and Swift (won't be going there!)- Thanks VM! and Roehl to name a few. Any comments on these companies would be great. RoadHard2003

Depends on what you want to do. Boyd is a flat-bed company and flat bedding is a demanding job but it can be rewarding. National is, I believe, a van company, Roehl is both and is headquartered out of WI. Falcon is both and they pull the double 48' flats and vans on the turnpikes. You won't be doing that until you can get some experience. You need to make up your mind whether you want to pull flats or vans then you can settle on a company. Vans are easiest but then you have to back into some hellacious places to unload and some of the loads can be unsettling. Flats haul everything but you have to learn how to tie down and how to tarp. You have to be able to tarp in freezing weather, in hot weather, and in high winds (which is a challenge). So sit down and think about it because each one is challenging in its own way.

Loconuez is right about deciding what you want to do. I have no idea what Roehls like for newbies but they do have a good pay package.Since you mentioned going to school in Indy,it's safe to assume you live in Indiana. I believe Roehl still has a yard in the Gary area and they do allow drivers to take trucks home or park someplace other than a terminal. I had worked construction with a guy that went to work for them and liked them. You can choose what you want to do. Van, flatbed or any thing else they do. At the Marshfield terminal they also do dump truck work.

Thanks for the info, all of it helps. Yes Roadhzrd, I live just south of Indy. I beleive I would start off driving a van, but I am always keeping my options open. I wondered if a company outside of the area I live would let me bring a truck home. I have some property and don't live in a subdivision. That way I can park the truck at home and not have to worry about the nieghbors bitchin. I'm going Monday to the DMV to test for my permit. But that is a whole weekend away. Until then I'm gonna watch the Packers beat up on New England! Have a great weekend guys! RoadHard2003

Living near Indy should make it easy to get loads home. You live in an area that should allow you a fair amount of time at home. With any luck you should be able to get loads to or through the Indy area quite often. Even just passing through you can always stop by the house for a shower and a meal at home.Even just a couple hours home during the week is refreshing. So keep that in mind when choosing a company. See where thier main lanes are.
