Living alone on the road, all the good news must come from far way, like ice cold water to the thirsty, truck drivers bring us everything we need. To all the truck drivers that were born in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s it’s almost time to get a little extra sleep, a folding of the hands, like a kiss of friendship, you’re almost home.

Every mile a piece of work, no sham on pay day all the parts of the work were genuine, honest drivers made from the past. We survived being born of mothers who smoked or drank while they carried us into the world. The mother’s of truck drivers took aspirin and ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and were never tested for diabetes. We ate our meals from honest kitchen furniture and we watched our fathers break down walls, trusting their message to us would be the wood for the fire.

Pride and craftsmanship seem to be repetitious as we follow the teaching of our parents, good advice at times lonely, trustworthy messengers we call our friends seem to visit us on the road, never wearing out their welcome even when we’re all alone.

After the trauma of growing up in baby cribs covered with bright lead based paints we were taught about foolish arguments, guiding a horse with a whip and to never yank on a dogs ear. Always in that front seat with us, that lofty place that puts us in charge, some deep happiness comes to us running on-time, everybody concerned but you as we have befriended the clock many hours ago. Angry people at times surround you, hot-tempered people endanger your soul but, remembering the past to always guarantee another mans load.

We know how great service sparkles in the cup, smoothly we handle the loss of a child’s doll and the kings truck. The truck wears and clock tics intimately connected to our past with no childproof lids on medicine bottles, no helmets when we rode our bikes, not even to mention the risks we took when hitchhiking.

Our parents built the strongest houses, not to crumble to ruin when things got hard. We learned those lessons as children, we could ride in cars without seat belts or air bags, block parties with neighbors and friends, crazy things never happened to us no friends tossed into the sea. My youth riding in the back of a pick up truck on a warm day was always a special treat, drinking water from a garden hose and not from a bottle from the store. We shared one soft drink with four of our friends, golden apples from a single tree, stone to slingshot it was never about me.

The youth in trucking, all about town thinking they are wise, dispatchers swing back and forth on their young hinges, always joking and damaging lies all about town. Their dainty morsels are never pleasant words, they’re deceiving us pretending to be kind, their wrongdoing almost never exposed, their tongues never still.

As you and I ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank our soda pop with real sugar we did not gain the weight of torment, fantasies of games in a box, poverty or shame to our parents. Driving the Kings truck, answering to critics, guaranteeing some strangers debt, a loud and cheerful greeting from my annoyed wife as she listened to the constant dripping of children on their rainy day. We’re told to protect the owners interests and the rewards will be ours, all of us to share the fruit but I cannot see the owners face reflected in the water. Flocks of drivers keep looking for the truth, separate fools going their own way, silver and gold are always promised but no real heart caring for the men.

Remember as children we would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we’re back when the streetlights came on we’re o.k.? The companies riches don’t last forever, no crown to be passed to the next man in line, we’re the ones that make sure enough milk is on hand for your family and little girls at school. Just like long ago no one can reach us all day and night but we succeed and everyone is glad.

Let’s show our grandchildren, we could spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps of wood, rolling them faster and faster down the hill, only to find out that we forgot the brakes again. After running into the bushes, not quite to the grave maybe they could learn how to solve problems, never to steal from their father or mother, knowing what’s wrong, telling them about pounding rain that can destroy the crops.

If we give them our past they will lack nothing, no video games can replace the father, no movies, surround sound or cell phone can suddenly teach them what their looking for in chat rooms or other stubborn places. Remember we went outside and found all our friends, we fell out of trees, we broke bones and cut fingers and never a lawsuit to cause fighting. As the truck gives you stability and as you feel the road always remember home, closer by the mile.

Culture is a perennial problem in change projects and needs to be carefully understood, especially if there is any expectation or desire to change the culture as a part of the project. Culture includes common values, attitudes and consequent behaviors. It directs how people make decisions and how they react to change. It can also vary within an organization, for example a 'leading edge' attitude may be found in research departments and 'customer first' value in service areas.
There are many areas of preferences that people have that shape cultures. There are, within these, a few which are of particular influence around change.


There are many reasons learn and use peoplenology;

Motivation: The overall subject of what drives us.

Processing: The thinking that leads to action.

Behaviors: That result from our decisions.

Culture: How we socially act together.

Learning Theory: How we get to make sense.

Personality: What makes us who we are.

Power: Our capability to act. Where we get it and how we use it.

Social Research: philosophers, philosophies and the search for meaning.

Stress: What winds us up.


Fear of retribution

Following out of fear is not so much following as being tugged along at the end of a rope.

Blind hope

Here, the follower is desperate for some solution, and what the leader is offering is either the only option they see or the best of a relatively weak set of choices.

Faith in leader

In this situation, the follower is blind to the solution but is following because they have such faith in the leader, they believe that they will, by some magic or genius, provide the answer to the follower's needs.

Intellectual agreement

Here, the follower understands the logic of the argument that the leader is putting forward and hence is following the rationale rather than the leader as a person, who they may respect but are not blindly following.

Buying the vision

When people buy a vision, they are emotionally closing on a view of the future that is appealing to them in some way and pulls them forward.

Followers and Respect

When a person is evaluating a situation and deciding whether to collaborate (and hence become a follower), they judge both the leader and also the solution the leader is offering to determine what action they will take.

Respect for the leader

When the leader is respected, which means they are at the very least trusted and probably liked as well, then this enables the leader to make proposals that followers will take seriously.

Respect for the solution

When the solution is respected, then the respect for the leader is not as important, although if the leader is not respected then the followers may doubt the ability of the leader to make the right choices along the way.

Followers and Trust

People follow those they trust.

Care and concern

We all have a very basic need for safety, which we can get either by taking control ourselves, or, as followers do, ceding this to our leaders.

Passive concern

Leaders make choices that can harm people. If you carefully avoid harming me, then I can trust you.

Active care

Beyond a passive concern is the active care where you may take deliberate action, which you would not otherwise take, to look after and actively care for me.

Reliability

Leaders need for their followers to trust that they will do as they say they will do.

Keep your promises

A simple rule for leaders is : 'Do what you say'. Keep your promises.

Honesty

The problem with honesty is that the short-term implications can be bad for leaders.

Tell the whole truth

If you always tell the truth, including the unvarnished whole truth and bad news that others might hide, then I know that when you say something, I have the complete story.

Followers and Liking

If I do not like you, then I will not follow you.

Goodness

If I judge you to be good, then I know you have similar values to me.

Similarity

We use external similarity as a short-cut to determine if a person is like us on the inside.

Vulnerability

We see ourselves as vulnerable, often with the sense of being a child that we all have to some degree. We see our failings, our limitations, and weaknesses.

Followers and Support

People follow those that help them.

Goals

Where the personal goals of the followers are aligned with the direction that the leaders is pointing, then it seems like a good idea to follow the leader, especially if it looks like they will be able to help me get what I want.

Support

I will also follow a person who actively helps me to get what I want.

Followers and Ideas

People will follow an idea, but not constraining objectives, then I may do it, but not in a way that makes me want to follow you.

Objectives as instructions

Objectives are useful in most organizations, of course, but they are often presented as fixed instructions, telling people what to do and how to do it in so much detail that it leaves little to the imagination.

Objectives as ideas

Objectives can be used to motivate and leaders can make effective use of formal systems of objective-setting to provide effective challenge and stimulation that will motivate people not only to do the work but also to follow the leader.

Ideas as inspiration

Inspiration occurs when an idea both aligns with my values and also gives me a sense of possibility, of what is not now but which could be in the future. It might thus change my beliefs and mental models.


Context Analysis

When investigating change it is important to understand the context within which the current situation is operating.

External context

The external context that affects the organization provides the forces to which the business must react and are common root causes of the need for change.

PESTLE forces

The broader business climate includes the external sea in which the business and its competitors must swim and provides the ultimate playing ground.

Market forces

Within the chosen markets, forces as price pressures, competitive shifts, customer demands and so on may be creating business tensions.

Internal context

As well as the external context, there are many contextual factors within organizations that can lead to the need for change.

Driving objectives

Out of the external forces and internal ambitions, business leaders identify the key purposes and objectives that they want to achieve and hence achieve success in the organization.

Organizational alignment

An aligned organization has its processes, technology, reporting structures and individual objectives all aligned with one another.

Organizational capability

As well as alignment, an organization needs its people to be able to complete work given to them.

Leadership

Leadership is a subject which includes a great deal about changing people's minds, often in fundamental ways.

Followership

The nature of leadership can perhaps be best understood by turning the coin over and studying followership.

The Leader-Follower loop

Leaders who want to create true followers do not just stand at the front of the army, yell 'charge' and then run forward.

Followers respond

Followers are seldom blind. They are human.

Gossip

If the leader does something that concerns them, then they will voice these concerns to one another long before letting the leader know.

Pack response

There may well be some level of pack response from followers.

Leaders adjust

If leaders do not do anything about the situation, then followers, who are volunteers, remember, will abandon in droves.

Noticing

At some point in the proceedings, the leader notices that followers are not as inclined to follow as they once were.

Diagnosing

When the shift in follower behavior is noticed, the next step is to figure out why, and particularly to know whether and how to connect this to the leader's own words or actions, or at least to external events that have shifted the playing field.

Adjusting

When you know where it is going and why it happened, then you can do something about it.

The dance continues

And so the band plays on. It is a closed system, with followers responding to leaders, who themselves adjust in response to this. Leadership and followership is thus an ongoing dance.

Structural Analysis

There are many structures within an organization which influence people's behavior. 'Function follows form' is a relevant saying.

Organizational structure

Evolutionary instincts require that you focus your thoughts, talents, energies on something to be successful. You must separate the relevant from the irrelevant. Actions knows no laws expect evolutionary laws. You become motivated by taking actions, you do not take true actions because you become motivated. Fear got you out of bed this morning. Fear is the wonderful invention of mother nature that loads the gun, turns the cranks, sends you to school and work. Fear makes the world go around and love just makes it pause now and then. Fear loves scenery and it travels at the speed of light, maybe faster. Humans have no taste for fear even though you search for it all the time. Night and day you look for things under the bed, that email that’s not good, that different look from the boss, the envelope in the mail box or anything that disturbs that mental sleep you call satisfaction. Humans are lazy by nature and nature thinks you should do better. Get out of bed, look for food, rob a bank, just do something. Under a palm tree you would live but, you have to leave the shade to go get food and water. Our commercial insanity provides you with so much fear, the cold calculations and veracity of management, sales, profits and loss and treachery of the market place that you hide most of the time. The people that understand fear conquer people, places and things. Your fear of failure is the real insanity. Most fears are baseless and boundless they just make sense out of nonsense at times. Nature and your evolutionary self wants you to be safe and sound so fear is what works. You lock your doors, count your money, study for tests, conform to your supervisor and you use affectionate terms to make friends. Most of human actions have a spirit of fear. I guess you want to be happy? The loudest people are not happy, the laws of nature makes us yell for food, scream about laws and complain about history. Food, water and shelter should make you happy but it doesn’t. We live in a world that the strong move the weaker out of the way, the evolutionary prehistoric twist. You constantly set yourself apart from every other human and make sure you’re happy, regardless. You are very willing to grab the best slices of everything because you want the best and require the best to be happy. When you get everything you want you’ll notice that you’re still not happy all the time. The lowest animal needs food, water and shelter. We want more and get more while we take more and we’re still not happy. Happiness by persuasion of your self is the only way. Persuading people that they’re happy is the only true path. A pleasant sound makes you happy supplied by nature, a bird singing, the waters flowing over rocks along a stream. The conflict within industry is that both parties have to be happy. The buyer must buy and the seller must profit. This clutter is called free enterprise and you have to eliminate the victim. Your product and service should cause a pause in the customer. A quite moment of trust, affection and love to be effective. Most products and services start out excited but do not result in a calming pause of satisfaction. The impressive silence of great service is seldom heard. You must take your customer, friends and employees by the hand and provide satisfactions, service and calming. You can only be happy when you also meeting their goals of happiness. Peasants are people, customers are people and your company must respect that first.

If you don’t appreciate the peasants they’ll revolt. If you don’t show gratitude to a customer they will revolt. If your employees are treated like peasants you can be sure they will get your attention when they leave your company, taking their friends with them, your customer listings and confidential company information. People are really good at receiving gratitude but most are very poor at giving gratitude. You have to tame your evolutionary survival traits and show gratitude to people. There are deliberate structures in the organization that seek to motivate people. Typically, this is based on financial reward.

Social structure

Overlaid across the organization is another invisible structure which is made up of the many and complex social relationships across the company.

Physical structure

The physical structure of the organization can have a very significant effect on the social structuring.

Causal Analysis

An excellent question when analyzing around change is 'why?' Causal Analysis seeks to identify and understand the reasons why things are as they are and hence enabling focus of change activity.

Root causes

The basic principle of causal analysis is to find causes that you can treat rather than treating symptoms (which, as all doctors know, seldom effects a lasting cure).

If I judge you to be good, then I know you have similar values to me.

Similarity

We use external similarity as a short-cut to determine if a person is like us on the inside.

Vulnerability

We see ourselves as vulnerable, often with the sense of being a child that we all have to some degree. We see our failings, our limitations, and weaknesses.

Followers and Support

People follow those that help them.

Goals

Where the personal goals of the followers are aligned with the direction that the leaders is pointing, then it seems like a good idea to follow the leader, especially if it looks like they will be able to help me get what I want.

Support

I will also follow a person who actively helps me to get what I want.

Followers and Ideas

People will follow an idea, but not constraining objectives, then I may do it, but not in a way that makes me want to follow you.

Objectives as instructions

Objectives are useful in most organizations, of course, but they are often presented as fixed instructions, telling people what to do and how to do it in so much detail that it leaves little to the imagination.

Objectives can be used to motivate and leaders can make effective use of formal systems of objective-setting to provide effective challenge and stimulation that will motivate people not only to do the work but also to follow the leader.

Ideas as inspiration

Inspiration occurs when an idea both aligns with my values and also gives me a sense of possibility, of what is not now but which could be in the future. It might thus change my beliefs and mental models.


Context Analysis

When investigating change it is important to understand the context within which the current situation is operating.

External context

The external context that affects the organization provides the forces to which the business must react and are common root causes of the need for change.

PESTLE forces

The broader business climate includes the external sea in which the business and its competitors must swim and provides the ultimate playing ground.

Market forces

Within the chosen markets, forces as price pressures, competitive shifts, customer demands and so on may be creating business tensions.

Internal context

As well as the external context, there are many contextual factors within organizations that can lead to the need for change.

Driving objectives

Out of the external forces and internal ambitions, business leaders identify the key purposes and objectives that they want to achieve and hence achieve success in the organization.

Culture is a perennial problem in change projects and needs to be carefully understood, especially if there is any expectation or desire to change the culture as a part of the project. Culture includes common values, attitudes and consequent behaviors. It directs how people make decisions and how they react to change. It can also vary within an organization, for example a 'leading edge' attitude may be found in research departments and 'customer first' value in service areas.
There are many areas of preferences that people have that shape cultures. There are, within these, a few which are of particular influence around change.


There are many reasons learn and use peoplenology;

Motivation: The overall subject of what drives us.

Processing: The thinking that leads to action.

Behaviors: That result from our decisions.

Culture: How we socially act together.

Learning Theory: How we get to make sense.

Personality: What makes us who we are.

Power: Our capability to act. Where we get it and how we use it.

Social Research: philosophers, philosophies and the search for meaning.

Stress: What winds us up.


Fear of retribution

Following out of fear is not so much following as being tugged along at the end of a rope.

Blind hope

Here, the follower is desperate for some solution, and what the leader is offering is either the only option they see or the best of a relatively weak set of choices.

Faith in leader

In this situation, the follower is blind to the solution but is following because they have such faith in the leader, they believe that they will, by some magic or genius, provide the answer to the follower's needs.

Intellectual agreement

Here, the follower understands the logic of the argument that the leader is putting forward and hence is following the rationale rather than the leader as a person, who they may respect but are not blindly following.

Buying the vision

When people buy a vision, they are emotionally closing on a view of the future that is appealing to them in some way and pulls them forward.

Followers and Respect

When a person is evaluating a situation and deciding whether to collaborate (and hence become a follower), they judge both the leader and also the solution the leader is offering to determine what action they will take.

Respect for the leader

When the leader is respected, which means they are at the very least trusted and probably liked as well, then this enables the leader to make proposals that followers will take seriously.

Respect for the solution

When the solution is respected, then the respect for the leader is not as important, although if the leader is not respected then the followers may doubt the ability of the leader to make the right choices along the way.

Followers and Trust

People follow those they trust.

Care and concern

We all have a very basic need for safety, which we can get either by taking control ourselves, or, as followers do, ceding this to our leaders.

Passive concern

Leaders make choices that can harm people. If you carefully avoid harming me, then I can trust you.

Active care

Beyond a passive concern is the active care where you may take deliberate action,
