blood flow can be re-oxygenated. The blood carries oxygen to the
muscles, allowing them to work harder. Deeper breathing also helps us to
scream more loudly!
• Fat from fatty cells and glucose from the liver being metabolized to create
instant energy.
• Blood vessels to the kidney and digestive system being constricted,
effectively shutting down systems that are not essential. A part of this
effect is reduction of saliva in the mouth. The bowels and bladder may
also open out to reduce the need for other internal actions (this might
also dissuade our attackers!).
• Blood vessels to the skin being constricted reducing any potential blood
loss. Sweat glands also open, providing an external cooling liquid to our
over-worked system. (this makes the skin look pale and clammy).
• Endorphins, which are the body's natural pain killers, are released (when
you are fighting, you do not want be bothered with pain–-that can be put
off until later.)
• The natural judgment system is also turned down and more primitive
responses take over–this is a time for action rather than deep thought.
Modern effects
Unfortunately, we are historically too close to the original value of this primitive
response for our systems to have evolved to a more appropriate use of it, and
many of life’s stresses trigger this response. The surprises and shocks of modern
living leave us in a permanent state of arousal that takes its toll on our bodies,
as described by Hans Selye's General Adaptation Syndrome.
It also happens when a creative new idea makes us feel uncertain about things

Watch out for angry red faces, cold and clammy skin, signs of a dry mouth,
increased breathing rates and jitteriness from activated muscles (in yourself, as
well as others).
When others are thus aroused, they are not thinking straight and can be
manipulated. You may even want to provoke them into this state. They also may
become aggressive and unpredictable, so on the other hand you may want to
avoid getting them into this state!
If you get wound up yourself, stop. Get out. Use any excuse to go somewhere
and calm down.

reduce the chances of their children surviving.
Nurturing our young
It is no good having children if we then let them die before they can pass their
genes on to their children. We thus are motivated to look after our children at
least until they can fly the nest. This can be a difficult transition, but nature
again has provided the answer in adolescence, where our teenagers push back
so hard and often that we are relieved to see them set out on their own!
The next generation
Being a grandparent is a very satisfying thing, as you now have proof that your
genes have been passed on and that the responsibility for their propagation can
now be handed back to your children whenever you get a bit tired.
So what?
Sex sells. This is because it appeals to this most basic of needs. Use sexy women
to sell to men and powerful men to sell to women. Create tension by showing
the opposite sex being won away by another person. Show perfect bodies and
promise 'you, too, can have a body like this'.
Children sell too. Awaken nurturing instincts by showing their innocence and
vulnerability.

Fight or flight effects include:

Evolutionary needs

Staying alive | Finding a mate | Nurturing our young | So what?
One of the basic and perhaps most degrading tenets of Darwinian evolution
which was expounded by Richard Dawkins in 'The Selfish Gene' is that we are
little more than 'gene machines'. Seen from a fundamentalist evolutionary sense,
our sole purpose in life is to propagating our genes, and our needs are honed to
relentlessly drive us in this direction.
Staying alive
The first step towards procreation is in staying healthy and alive. This means
finding food and shelter and, if necessary, beating other people in order to get it.
Finding a mate
Once we are reasonably secure, the next step towards procreating our genes is
finding a mate (and doing the deed, of course).
For this, we again may need to beat off other suitors, or at least impress our
potential partners sufficiently that they choose to mate with us rather than our
genetic competitors.
The fact that the male is larger than the female is a common sign that humans
are naturally a male-dominated society. The larger male is not only better able to
fight off other males, but they are also able to keep women in their place. The
force of genetics sadly does not know about Political Correctness.
What men want
Men and women look for different things in their partners. Men look for women
who seem likely to be able to bear plenty of strong children. They thus look for
women who:
• are young and healthy and have many childbearing years ahead of them.
• have large breasts for feeding their children.
• have wide hips so they will not have delivery problems.
Men are also easily fooled by symbolism such as red lipstick that reminds them
of a full vagina and make-up that fills in the cracks and makes the woman look
younger than she is.
Men are not monogamous by nature, and a man will happily have children with
many women, as this spreads his seed around and increases the chances of
successful propagation of his genes.
What women want
Women are not like men. A major difference is that they are generally left to
bring up the children, giving them ten to twenty years of work after their
debilitating nine months of pregnancy. They thus look for men who:
• are strong and powerful and can feed and protect them and their
children.
• are kind and thoughtful and will stay with them.
Women thus will settle for older men who have gained affluence and position in
society and who may be less likely to stray. They fight other women not with
strength, but with cunning and carefully-placed words (which they also use to...

Distress
The most immediate effect of the betrayal of trust is in the emotional impact on
the person betrayed. Generally speaking, the greater the trust that you had put
in the other person and the greater the impact their betrayal has on you, then
the greater the distress you will feel.
A number of different emotions may be felt upon realizing you have been
betrayed. The most common is anger although, depending on the situation, you
might the fear of loss of the relationship and repulsion at the lack of integrity of
the other person.
Loss of trust
When you are betrayed by someone, it is highly likely that you will not easily
trust them again. Trust is fragile and can be lost instantly or there is a hysterisis
whereby a long-earned trust may be eroded and then suddenly lost.
Restorative justice
The first thing that the betrayed person may seek from the betrayer is some
form of restitution.
The simplest form of restitution is a straightforward apology. Restoration means
putting things back as they were, so it may include some act of contrition to
demonstrate one is truly sorry. This may include action and even extra payment
to the offended party.
Retributive justice
Restoration may well not be enough for the betrayed person and they may seek
revenge of some sort, whereby they can feel the satisfaction of seeing the other
person suffer in the way that they have suffered.
Revenge can be many times more severe than reparation as the hurt party seeks
to make the other person suffer in return.
So what?
So don't get into these situations!! If you betray someone, it is often best to
come clean. Accept responsibility for personal failure and personally apologize.
Demonstrate how you will fix process failure, and offer compensation.
The alternatives to these recovery actions may cost you much more.
Note: A small betrayal can, in fact, actually help. The way it works is that you fail
in a relatively unimportant way, then go overboard in recovery. The message
sent is 'we care so much about you even for the small things (so just imagine
how much we care about the bigger things)'. Done well, it can actually increase
loyalty.

Value exchange works because we each value things differently. If I have a
whole flock of sheep but no milk, then I can do business with a person who has
a herd of cows but no clothes. This principle of reciprocity is what binds societies
together.
Trust in value exchange occurs when we do not know fully whether what we are
receiving is what we expect. When we buy a car, don’t want to be sold a ringer
which the seller knows is faulty. When I get advice in business, I want it to be
based on facts, not wild opinions.
Definition 2: Trust means making an exchange with someone when you do
not have full knowledge about them, their intent and the things they are
offering to you.
Delayed reciprocity
Exchange is not just about an immediate swapping of cows and sheep or hugs
and kisses. What makes companies and societies really work is that something is
given now, but the return is paid back some time in the future. The advantage of
this is that we can create a more flexible environment, where you can get what
you need when you need it, rather than having to save up for it.
Trust now becomes particularly important, because otherwise we are giving
something for nothing. The delay we have placed in the reciprocal arrangement
adds a high level of uncertainty which we need to mitigate through trust.
What is often called the ‘golden rule’ is a simple formula for creating trust. ‘Do
unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ It sets up the dynamic for my
giving you something now with the hope of getting back some unspecified thing
in the indeterminate future.
Definition 3: Trust means giving something now with an expectation that it
will be repaid, possibly in some unspecified way at some unspecified time in
the future.
Exposed vulnerabilities
When we trust other people, we may not only be giving them something in hope
of getting something else back in the future, we may also be exposing ourselves
in a way that they can take advantage of our vulnerabilities. If I buy a car from
you and I do not know a good price, you can lie to me so you get a better
bargain. If I tell you in confidence about the problems I am having with work,
you could use this to further your own career at my expense.
Although the threat of retribution or projected feelings of guilt can counteract
your temptation to abuse my exposed vulnerabilities, if you succumb I still get
hurt and may still end up with the shorter stick. For our transaction to complete
successfully, I must be able to trust that such agonies will not come to pass.
Definition 4: Trust means enabling other people to take advantage of your
vulnerabilities—but expecting that they will not do this.
So what?
So learn about trust, how it works and how to build it. If you do it well, other
people will give you the earth. If you betray them, they will hunt you to the ends
of the earth.

Trust is both and emotional and logical act. Emotionally, it is where you expose your
vulnerabilities to people, but believing they will not take advantage of your openness. Logically, it
is where you have assessed the probabilities of gain and loss, calculating expected utility based
on hard performance data, and concluded that the person in question will behave in a predictable
manner. In practice, trust is a bit of both. I trust you because I have experienced your
trustworthiness and because I have faith in human nature.
We feel trust. Emotions associated with trust include companionship, friendship, love,
agreement, relaxation, comfort.
There are a number of different ways we can define trust. Here are the dimensions of trust and
consequent definitions.
Predictability
It is a normal part of the human condition to be constantly forecasting ahead. We build internal
models of the world based both on our experiences and what others tell us, and then use these
to guess what will happen next. This allows us to spot and prepare for threats and also make
plans to achieve our longer-term goals.
The greatest unpredictability is at 50%; a reliable enemy can be preferable to an unpredictable
friend, as at least we know where we are with them.
Definition 1: Trust means being able to predict what other people will do and what situations
will occur. If we can surround ourselves with people we trust, then we can create a safe
present and an even better future.

as true that you’re an exceptional friend. We now own something together, only the two of us.
You’re starting to essentially feel the trust between us already. Emotions associated
with trust you already know something about. A cup of coffee in the morning at work includes
companionship, friendship, agreement, relaxation and comfort. You feel the trust between us
even though trust has many dimensions and definitions. Sitting in a rocking chair while talking
calls to your mind these same emotions and feelings. The next time we sit on the porch
together you have the comfort and trust of predictability. The lack of variation or trust we have
will expand and increase again. Your entire life is spent on trying to predict the future,
forecasting the next moment in time. You trust predictability so you trust me based on your own
internal models of education, experiences and emotions. With me you don’t have to guess what
happens next. You slowly and cautiously abandon your guarding and stop looking for threats
and start making plans for our longer term relationship. As you learn that you can trust me you
let go of old ideas and experiences as they do not apply to us. You let go of the past and grasp
for the future. Trust means being able to predict what we will do and what situations will occur.
If you surround yourself with people you trust, then you can create a safe present and a better
future. You and I are exchanging values with each other even though we do not know fully
whether what we are receiving is what we expect. We are trusting the exchange has value in
the future. I can give you what you may need when you may want it because I am your friend
for life. Trust means giving something now with an expectation that it will be repaid, possibly in
some unspecified way at some unspecified time in the future.
Trust means enabling other people to take advantage of your vulnerabilities—but expecting
that they will not do this. Telling you knowledge about myself also gives you the responsibility of
knowing another person. You can see why honest trust always turns into honest affections. You
have persuaded me to trust you by me trusting you first. You have allowed me to lay my hand
on your heart and change your mind about many things. You have a new and greater position in
life today, you have a friend and found that others love you without obligations.
