1st Year in Trucking

New idea... input needed please!

I actually agree with you all, and as you all know I'm a rookie to the civilian trucking industry. But I KNOW VM, and a couple others will be happy to hear that I'm going to do a new program called Operation Freedom, for people like me leaving the military to use our GI Bill to pay for trucking school, and we get our GI Bill benefits for our first 12months on the road as an Aprentice Driver. The company I'm going to school at is Western Truck School which is based in Sacramento but has a school in Las Vegas, and the company I'll be driving for after that is Werner. I know its still a good sized company, but I've yet to hear or see anything bad about them in print or media, and yes I look lol. They have an 11 state regional run that will have me home every 10-14days for two days. I've talked to their drivers, and former drivers and none have called the company a "machine." So I'm looking forward to feedback from all you guys. This is also in my blog, so reply there, THANKS

Well as far as I know Werner isn't too bad. Just as long as you don't mind being babysat. They have the electronic logs and they do watch you. You will be told when your hours are about up for the day and when if there is no movement after your 10 hour break they will start sending messages to the truck asking why your not moving. When you stop for meals and a shower they will expect the truck to be moving again in a certain amount of time and if it's not they want to know why. As for the home time it will be 48 hours not 2 full days. If your in by 1600 on Friday you will be expected back in the truck by 1600 on Sunday. There are companies that will estimate what time you will get in and start your 48 hrs then. If you hit any slowdowns and get in alot later than what they estimated it will be to bad. Be in your truck and ready to roll by a certain time. They didn't lie about 2 days off, they just didn't tell you everything.

I haven't heard many bad things at all about Werner. I'm glad your going through a private school I'm so proud that your not making a common mistake in this biz. You'll thank us later for the advice when you run into other drivers. Good Luck and have fun..VM-out!
