owner/operator partnership?

[Comments] [Send Article] [Improper]I'm tired of looking at a computer. I'm close to 55 and considering a career change. I know truckers are needed and I just drove from Phoenix to Green Bay and back and really enjoyed driving the long haul. But I'm not sure I'd like to work for a company. I talked with my cousin in Green Bay and he is in the same situation as I am. He's facing a changing work situation and may need to change careers. He also is thinking about trucking. Since we both will just need to supplement our incomes it strikes me that we could go together as partners in owning and operating a truck. We are very close and trust each other implicitly. Would anyone have any advice for anyone considering such a proposition?[/summary]

I would have to agree with lenutt. I have teamed and trained and it is tough for 2 people to live that way. Try this, lock yourself in the bathroom with your friend for 1 month, if you both are still alive and like each other, then go for it.
All kidding aside. Try driving a company truck with your friend for awhile before you buy a truck.
I have lots of info on my website at:

Thanks guys. Your comments are appreciated. I was thinking we would alternate driving the truck. But you're saying you need a 2 man team to drive? I guess I have a lot of research to do. But isn't the basic idea of two people owning a truck a sound one if neither needs a fulltime income but rather just a suplimental one? Couldn't we hire another driver (drivers) to do the actual driving with us?

My wife and I ran as a team for many years. We were owner/operators and we would stay out 3 weeks at a time and take a week off.W got along great for a couple of weeks but we started getting on each others nerves by the third week.Anouther thing to keep in mind is the price of fuel now.
