life of a truck driver

waiting again

looks like all I am doing is waiting of late. I feel like I am sitting in a doctor's office looking through all the old magazines and wishing that he would hurry up. I can't get unloaded until 4:30 this afternoon so in the meantime I will dig out all the old magazines and read them who knows I might learn something interesting. The life of a truck driver entails so much hurry up and wait that it is unbelieveable. They tell you to hurry, hurry you have to be there yesterday and this load is so hot that flames are coming off it. You get there and they say "what are you doing here so early? we can't use this until next week" all you can say is "duh, why are I so dumb that they catch me like this so much?"

If you are reading this and considering a life of glory, high pay and a recognition of a job well done then you might think twice. You might make more money than you can any place else but it definitely is not a life of glory. It takes a major toll on your family and in many ways you can become estranged from your family because you just don't understand each other any more. This is no one's fault it just happens because a family must have a place to live, clothes to wear and food to eat. Someone must pay the price to make sure their family is well taken care of and usually it is the truck driver. Hey, no one ever said that life is fair, it is just life. I am lucky to have a very understanding wife, many wives cannot handle the long periods of separation. The hardest hit are the children, wives are adult and can understand the situation. Most truck drivers I know have trouble with the children because they simply cannot understand why you are not there to help them with their problems.

Oh, well just understand that this is a demanding job. Your family life suffers, your health suffers and your peace of mind is gone. You constantly worry about your family and how you can make it up to them. I don't mean to be so down on this job but to do this job and do it right you personally have to give up so many things that mean so much to you. At times you just want to chuck it all and go home and make your amends but you know that your family still has to survive and that keeps you going. Just make sure you ready for this before you do it because you should never make a committment then change your mind in mid stream. You lower your own self esteem that way.

My apologies for being negative about the job but you have to understand the negatives as well as the positives to do something right. Knowing half of what you should will only disappoint you.
have a good day
