Day 7

Well...

Today was spent with more backing practice. Lord knows I need it. Unfortunitely It was around 10 degrees with a wind chill of -5. GD cold. We worked on blind side parallel and sight side parallel, we then worked on serpentine. All of them take patience and persistance. And all the while we were working on straight backing and shifting. Each piece of the puzzle is starting to fit toghether. I still get frustraited, but who doesn't? No matter what I'm still giving it 100% and really watching the others in the class. We've all been helping eachother. We did however have on student leave the class today... I wish him well with everything. More homework todo....

Day 5

Well...

Today we spent the entire day with backing practice. Gotta say it takes getting used to. I had some trouble right off the bat. I keep comparing myself to the the others in the class. Which I see now was not good. The other guys have cdls and have been behind the wheel of a big rig before. So after being down on myself, I got fed up with doing that, and just took my time and decided I was going to figure out what I was doing wrong. I did and at the end of the day I was able to get the hang of it. I know that I will spend every available moment practicing my backing.
My trainer has been excellent, he never makes me feel like I an idiot when I screw up. He gives great pointers and is willing to answer any and all questions. The school continues to impress me. All of the guys in the class are able to get a great deal of time in the trucks.

The pre-trip came easy for me, as I am able to memorize information easily. It is VERY important to do your pre-trip the same way every time, doing that you are less likely to miss something.

My biggest piece of advice for any newbie, is "Rome was not built in one day" Take it slow and work on the basics and it will all come together. Keep trying your hardest and ask questions.
You'll be surprised how much you improve when you just relax and put forth the effort to learn the right way. Always do it the safe way, you life depends on it!

Day 4 classwork

Well...

Today was not too difficult, just classwork. We watched a couple vids on pre-trip/post-trip inspection and the importance of them. I just can't see why someone would just start the truck up and drive off without checking the damn thing, I mean it's your life your dealing with and the life of everyone around you. Oh we also worked on coupling and un-coupling. Man I'd hate to have to call my manager and have to explain why I dropped the trailer on the ground, let alone have to call my family and tell them I got fired, and owe the money to fix the trailer and replace the damaged goods. All in all today went by fast. Tomorrow we practice backing and docking, pre-trip and coupling.
So I'm off to finish my homework.

Day 3 Shiftin' Gears

Well ...

Finally we started to get behind the wheel. We spent the entire 9hrs today behind the wheel, bobtailing. I have to say that from the outside looking in it seems that it would not be that all THAT HARD. Well IT IS. I felt like I might have to buy a new transmission after my first attempts. Our tainer Jim was nothing but professional, not once did he say a cross word, he just gave us encouragement and always told us what we were doing to cause our shifting problem. He was so good in fact that he could tell you exactly what was wrong while you were doing it, how to quickly regain the gear you missed. After the first go round we were able to double clutch and downshift without looking at the stick, like it was the problem. After lunch we were all able to get around the range with minimal problems, and yes we sometimes did "grind it to find it". By the end of our day I felt like I was getting the hang of it. We have classroom work tomorrow, but on Friday we will be out on the range to practice straight backing with the trailer.
Back to the books....

First day of CDL school!!

Well todays the day for my first day of training with Millis Transfer out of Richfield, Wisconsin. We spent most of the day going over the D.O.T. regulations and lots of paperwork.
I have to say that I'm highly impressed with our trainer Jim. The facilities are top notch. The hotel is great, it's really nice to stay somewhere that you don't have to worry about bugs and such! Whe worked on our log books and all of the rules of FMSCA 395.
Have to give credit to all of the drivers who keep it legal!
Have alot of studying to do...
I'll update from the hotel daily...

Some Idiot signs...

Free Idiot Signs!! ;)
Number One Idiot of 2006

A woman called into the Poison Control Center, very upset because she caught her little daughter eating ants. She was quickly reassured that the ants are not harmful and there would be no need to bring her daughter into the hospital. She calmed down and at the end of the conversation happened to mention that she gave her daughter some ant poison to eat in order to kill the ants.
They told her that she better bring her daughter into the emergency room right away.

Here's your sign, lady. Wear it with pride.

Number Two Idiot of 2006
Early this year, some Boeing employees on the airfield decided to steal a life raft from one of the 747s. They were successful in getting it out of the plane and home. Shortly after they took it for a float on the river, they noticed a Coast Guard helicopter coming towards them. It turned out that the chopper was homing in on the emergency locator beacon that activated when the raft was inflated.
They are no longer employed at Boeing.

Here's your sign, guys. Don't get it wet; the paint might run.

Number Three Idiot of 2006
A man, wanting to rob a downtown Bank of America, walked into the Branch and wrote this: "Put all your muny in this bag."
While standing in line, waiting to give his note to the teller, he began to worry that someone had seen him write the note and might call the police before he reached the teller's window.
So he left the Bank of America and crossed the street to the Wells Fargo Bank. After waiting a few minutes in line, he handed his note to the Wells Fargo teller. She read it and surmising from his spelling errors that he wasn't the brightest light in the harbor, told him that she could not accept his stickup note because it was written on a Bank of America deposit slip and that he would either have to fill out a Wells Fargo deposit slip or go back to Bank of America. Looking somewhat defeated, the man said, "OK" and left. He was arrested a few minutes later, as he was waiting in line back at Bank of America.

Don't bother with this guy's sign. He probably couldn't read it
anyway.

Number Four Idiot of 2006
A motorist was unknowingly caught in an automated speed trap that measured his speed using radar and photographed his car. He later received in the mail a ticket for $40 and a photo of his car. Instead of payment, he sent the police department a photograph of $40. Several days later, he received a letter from the police that contained another picture, this time of handcuffs.
He immediately mailed in his $40.

Wise guy........ but you still get a sign

Number Five Idiot of 2006
A guy walked into a little corner store with a shotgun and demanded all of the cash from the cash drawer. After the cashier put the cash in a bag, the robber saw a bottle of Scotch that he wanted behind the counter on the shelf. He told the cashier to put it in the bag as well, but the cashier refused and said, "Because I don't believe you are over 21." The robber said he was, but the clerk still refused to give it to him because she didn't believe him.
At this point, the robber took his driver's license out of his wallet and gave it to the clerk. The clerk looked it over and agreed that the man was in fact over 21 and she put the Scotch in the bag.
The robber then ran from the store with his loot. The cashier promptly called t he police and gave the name and address of the robber that he got off the license. They arrested the robber two hours later.

This guy definitely needs a sign.

Idiot Number Six of 2006
A pair of Michigan robbers entered a record shop nervously waving revolvers. The first one shouted, "Nobody move!" When his partner moved, the startled first bandit shot him.

This guy doesn't even deserve a sign

Idiot Number Seven of 2006
Seems this guy wanted some beer pretty badly. He decided that he'd just throw a cinder block through a liquor store window, grab some booze, and run. So he lifted the cinder block and heaved it over his head at the window. The cinder block bounced back knocking him unconscious. It seems the liquor store window was made of Plexi-Glass. The whole event was caught on videotape.
Yep, Here's your sign
