Budgeting On The Road

[Comments] [Send Article] [Improper]

I am trying to imagine life on the road as a trucker and how much it would actually cost a week to survive out there as a company driver, obviously an owner operator is gonna have much higher expenses but a higher income. I visited a truck stop up here in Ontario (Fifth Wheel) and asked a few questions, and one of them was how much a shower costs?.... $7.00 and I noticed an all-you-can-eat buffet for $9.99 in the restaurant. The cashier said if I were to purchase 300 Litres or more of diesel I could shower for free. I'm thinking I'm looking at atleast $20 a day to survive out there which comes to about $600 approx. a month subtract the days for home time. Am I close to being correct? Would appreciate some feedback if anyone has time. Thanks

The cost out here really varies from area to area. And you didn't mention things for in the truck. If you stay out for long periods of time you have to do laundry on the road. You will probably want to have something to eat and drink while in the truck. If you use a regular cooler you need to purchase ice or buy an electric cooler(these can be found in most truckstops as well as some stores). You will not have the luxury of truckstops nearby and may spend long periods of time in the dock out in the middle of nowhere. So plan accordingly. The only meal you may have will be what is in your truck. Then you may not have time to stop long enough to eat because you have an appointment time to keep. Remember that you will be in a truck and won't be able to just pull into a fast food joint for a meal. Truckers are very limited as to where we can stop. With you being from Canada you will have to plan for bad weather this time of year.
