Getting Started

Ok here we go. I am looking to get a CDL and get out on the road. I have been looking at the many companies that either sponsor the training or porvide the training. I have spoken to C.R. England, Swift, Prime, and Schneider. To be honest at this point I feel the most comfortable with Schneider. Just from looking at the training program Schneider offers it appeals to me the most. I just don't want to get out on the road feeling uncomfortable or lost because of lack of training. Anyone that looks around on any of these blogs about the trucking industry can pretty much assume CR England, and Swift are the bottom of the barrel but I haven't been able to find much on Prime, or Schneider as far as drivers thoughts or comments. Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks All,
IamDriving3

Well its a gamble, no matter who trains you, you have to jump in the water some time. Even if you go to a private truck school or a company school they get you in and out as soon as you can pass they let you take the test so you can get with a "TRAINER" hehehe...and then its a gamble with them. Best of luck...VM-out!

I live near Green Bay and know people that have gone to Schnieder. They probably have one of the best training programs around. If your going to go with a company training program Schnieder is the one to go with. The only reason I don't work there is I don't like being a number in the system and being babysat. They do keep close tabs on all thier trucks and let you know when your doing something that is against company policy. Like speed, how long you drive, how long the truck idles, length of time sitting and on and on and.... Like VM and I have said to everyone else, put your time in until the schooling is paid for and if your not happy you will have experience and know what you want in a company and leave.

I went thru the Schneider school almost 4 years ago and enjoyed it. I thought it was fairly thorough, although there are always more things to learn after you hit the road solo. The Big Punkin has good points and bad points, but I think the good out weighs the bad. Definitely stay for the full year, at least. By then you'll know if trucking is for you. Then you'll have learned enough about the industry to make an intelligent choice about jumping to another company or staying a Punkin driver. Bottom line: the school was good if you apply yourself. The company is a good first step into the trucking business, and can be your last job too. I'd probably still be with them, but I moved to WY, out of their hiring area. Oh well. Good luck and keep it shiny side up.
