The Long Way
Confessions of a neophyte trucker

The tests you take so you can take tests!

[Comments] [Send Article] [Improper]

So to be a driver you have to have a CDL...sure everybody knows that. But, who knew there was so much material on these tests.

We will take three tests on Monday; General, Combination and Air Brakes. All we did today was take practice exams for all three and I did really well so I am going to take a night off from studying.

Next week we will be heading to the range where we will start driving! There is a day shift from 5am to 3pm or nights from 3pm to 1am and I have put in for days because getting off at 3 and having the rest of the day off is more appealing. After a week on the range I will have a chance to start driving with another driver making runs locally(well, in the state anyway).

Well, so far I am very happy with Swift and the way we have been treated. I am very much looking forward to being turned loose...

Thanks all, hope to see you soon.

It's not my intention to scare drivers away from driving its just that when I started all I was thrown to the wolves after a joke of a truck school. You can make good money in trucking, is it gonna happen overnight, NO! You have to pay your dues after three years of driving I finally found a home that pays well and I am home every night. So as a former Swift driver I say get your experience and leave as fast as you can because thats all Swift wants anyway.

Hey Hopps - I don't agree with the first comment at all. Swift doesn't work that way if you're not a jerk to them. My Father in Law has worked for Swift since they bought out MS Carriers and my husband has worked for them since May of this year. Both like working for Swift and neither intend to leave any time soon and Swift wouldn't want them too. As for experience - yeah you have to work your way there! Thats a given. Thats with any job. But when you're making over 55g's a year like them you'll be patting yourself on the back. A word to the wise - Swift drivers don't wave or acknowledge other Swift drivers no matter the situation. Thats the ONLY bad thing about Swift - the other drivers. Good pay, great benefits including the stock option, they know your name and acknowledge family issues - can't beat it. Good luck with your testing and when you get out there - be on time and be safe. And always always remember - when in doubt, get out.

The above comment is total bullshit, 55g's a year with SWIFT I almost fell out of my chair laughing. I think this "wife" of a trucker is nothing but a Recruiter for Swift. When MsCarriers was bought out the drivers trashed the terminal. Swift cares nothing about you I was never a jerk and was over and over again screwed. I did favors for DM's saying if you take this load I'll get you home just to be jerked around by another jerk of a DM. So if you want to get in a debate sister remember I've been there I know you have not end of story..
