We were sitting in the Flying J parking lot in Post Falls, ID the other night when something struck me as odd. It took me a minute to figure out what it was. The whole parking lot was packed, we actually circled the lot and came back to the fuel island. Jeff sat there while I ran in to the bathroom and grabbed a pack of cigarettes and a cup of coffee. We figured we would ride down the road since there was no parking. As I am coming out he spots someone leaving, so he takes off for the spot. We are sitting there without the truck running, of course - we are owner operators - messing around on the computer. And it dawns on me what was odd. There was a whole truckstop full of trucks and it was silent! There were maybe 1 or 2 trucks idling. We could actually hear people talking 5 or 6 trucks down. I think we might have woke up the Werner driver next to us with our talking as both of windows and his were open. Now granted it was the ideal day and night to shut the truck off, but you know how it is. There are always drivers that never ever shut the truck off. So the combination of a comfortably cool evening and the price of fuel made for a very eerie sound in the truckstop that day - The Sounds Of Silence!!

it is scary when you can hear a pin drop in a truck stop, isn't it? Like you I am an O/O and I don't like burning fuel that doesn't make me money rather then losing it.

Coleen, it is a rare sound of silence. What I don't get is why so many drivers pull up to the fuel island, fuel, go inside, do whatever and never turn off their engines. Why? Do they all have dead batteries.

Got a question for you, in your previous blog you said you worked for crst as an o/o. my husband is an o/o and looking to find a company that will treat him right, as is every other truck driver. we both decided we never really hear anything neg or pos about them. how well do they treat you?
