Sleeper Berth Provision

[Comments] [Send Article] [Improper]

A question of split sleepers has been posed, based on the new sleeper berth provision requiring one sleeper berth period to be 8 hours in length. The question concerns team drivers operating 8 hrs driving and 8 hours in the sleeper berth. Many team drivers believe they use the 8 hour sleeper berth in this manner. Not true. It doesn't work !!!

Each driver, during the second 8 hour driving period, following an 8 hour sleeper, will have reached their 11 hours of driving 3 hours out of the sleeper, and their 14th hour on duty, 6 hours out of the sleeper.

Believe me motor carriers and drivers . . . as soon as enforcement is up to speed on the sleeper berth stuff a lot of teams are going to have a proble during roadside inspections.

Motor carriers will have problems when the feds visit to conduct a compliance review.

No more split sleeper berth . . .

There is a correct way to use the split sleeper berth (SLB)which is with two periods, one of 2 and one of 8 hrs. I agree that this provision does absolutely nothing to help team drivers and it's important to note that the 2 hrs SLB time counts against the 14 hr clock while the 8 hrs do not. Here is a quote from DOT's brochure "CMV drivers using the sleeper berth provision must take at least 8 consecutive hours in the sleeper berth, plus 2 consecutive hours either in the sleeper berth, off duty, or any combination of the two."
